Experience Relief with a Gentle Root Canal

What is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure used to treat infection at the center of a tooth (the root canal system). It's designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root canal, prevent reinfection, and save the natural tooth. The treatment involves the removal of the infected or damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then filling and sealing it to protect against further damage.

Causes for Needing Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is typically needed for:

  • Tooth Decay: Deep decay that has penetrated the outer layers of the teeth.
  • Repeated Dental Procedures: On the same tooth that may cause wear.
  • Faulty Crowns: Existing crowns that have become compromised.
  • Cracks or Chips in the Tooth: Cracks that expose the tooth pulp to microbial infection.
  • Trauma: A traumatic injury to a tooth that may cause pulp damage, even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks.

Symptoms of Needing Root Canal Treatment

It's crucial to recognize the signs that might indicate the need for root canal therapy:

  • Persistent Pain: Ongoing pain that bothers you throughout the day.
  • Sensitivity to Heat and Cold: A sharp pain when eating or drinking hot or cold foods and beverages.
  • Tooth Discoloration: A darkening of the tooth.
  • Swollen Gums: Swelling around the tooth that might be tender to touch.
  • Pain When Eating or Touching the Tooth: Especially if the pain lingers.
  • A Cracked or Chipped Tooth: Where the damage reaches into the pulp.
  • Loosened Tooth: Increased mobility in the affected tooth.

The Root Canal Procedure: A Step-by-Step Guide

Consultation and Diagnosis

The first step to your root canal treatment at Grace Dental Care is a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Cherian. Using advanced diagnostic tools, we assess the extent of the infection and the overall health of your oral tissues.

Preparation

If a root canal is necessary, the area around the tooth will be numbed with a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Dr. Cherian will then place a small protective sheet called a dental dam over the area to isolate the tooth and keep it clean and free of saliva during the treatment.

Cleaning the Root Canal

Dr. Cherian will create a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the infected or damaged pulp. Specialized instruments are used to carefully remove the pulp, and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

Filling the Root Canal

Once the tooth is clean and dry, it will be filled with a biocompatible material, usually a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. The canal is then sealed with adhesive cement to prevent bacteria from entering in the future.

Restoring the Tooth

After the root canal therapy, the tooth needs to be restored to its full function and appearance. Most often, a crown is placed on the tooth to protect and restore it to full function. Dr. Cherian will discuss all the restoration options with you and ensure that the final result perfectly matches the rest of your teeth.

Follow-Up

After your root canal therapy, a follow-up appointment may be necessary to ensure the treated area is healing properly. These appointments are a standard part of our comprehensive care.
